REVIEW by Jeff Ascough, UK

I’ve never been one for buying books on wedding photography. I find that they date quickly, the pictures are usually poorly printed, and the content is lacking. Most books are about as attractive as watching Manchester City vs  Newcastle United on a cold, wet November afternoon. It seems anyone can put out a book these days and some of the more recent ones, especially on this side of the pond, have been truly awful.
However, this book by Marcus has rekindled my faith in wedding photography books. It’s exceptional.
Marcus is a phenomenal photographer, a great friend, and a wonderfully warm human being. This book is special because all of these things come through in both the text and the pictures that are contained within the book. This book is all about Marcus. It doesn’t try to be anything else. It’s about his vision, his technique and philosophy.
You can’t have a wedding photography book without images. And boy does this book have some really great pictures. He could have removed all the text and simply put a book together of his photographs. I would have been very happy with that. Some of his best known images are highlighted as well as others which aren’t so well known. The images are powerful, fun, romantic, emotional, and every so often I just have to smile and appreciate the sheer god-given talent that this man has got when it comes to shooting weddings.
The added bonus is, of course, the thoughts and ideas that come out of every page. Marcus covers pretty much everything anyone would ever want to know about the mechanics and philosophy of shooting a wedding. From what to do at church, through to post processing and album design. He even covers business and marketing ideas. Yeah I know many books do this, but what you get here is far deeper than simply telling you how to press the button. You learn about Marcus’ life, his personal experiences, and his whole reason for him being a wedding photographer. That’s what makes this book unique. Sections of the book are almost autobiographical, and that for me is a great touch.
In my opinion, this is one of the best books that has ever been written on wedding photography. The quality of the images are worth the cover price alone. But it’s the text, the ideas, the sheer inspiration, and the fact that Marcus is one of the few authors that actually walks the walk, that makes this book so special.
Whether you are a complete newcomer to the business, or a seasoned pro, you will love this book. Just go and buy it. You won’t be disappointed.
